Chineham Library Closes for Refurbishment

Chineham Library, currently closed for major refurbishment work, is set to become a new technology trailblazer.

When the library reopens on April 5 the public will no longer have to wait for a member of staff to receive or issue items at the reception counter.

Instead borrowers will put books, cds and dvds through a scanner when bringing them back or taking them out.

Chineham Library, which has an average of 1,500 visitors a week, will be only the third Hampshire County Council library to be fitted with the device called Radio Frequency Identity System.

Jan Clayton, Chineham Library supervisor, said: "The scanning system is already being used in ten other counties in the country, and from what I have heard people prefer it because it is much quicker."

She said it would also enable her six staff to spend more time helping the public and doing other work such as filling shelves and dealing with the stock.

There will no longer be a reception counter. Instead a help desk is to be opened in another part of the library floor.

The month long refurbishment - which started on March 5 - also involves turning the non-fiction area into a Children's Centre under the auspices of the Government's Sure Start Scheme.

Due to open at the end of June, the centre is designed to give every child the best start in life from birth to the age of five.    This is the first major work carried out at the library since it opened in June 1984.
