I have been approached by a few residents who would like to have “health
walk” in the Old Basing and Lychpit area, so need to ask for your assistance
in helping to get this started.
The “Walking the Way to Health” scheme is a national project and a
partnership between The British Heart Foundation and Natural England –
www.whi.org.uk/ the aim is to
establish groups of local adults trained to promote walking and to lead
walks in their local area on a regular basis to help people to become more
active. They can be for retired people, people with special needs,
children, families, wheelchair users, and they could be gentle strolls,
power walks, themed walks, daytime walks, evening walks, weekend walks –
it’s up to you and they can be on days and times to suit you.
Ideally we would get a group together of about 8 people (or more) who would
work together to plan and lead the walks on a Rota basis – this works out at
just one a month each. Endorsed local training will be available for
those interested in becoming involved either as leaders or back-markers and
it will give you a qualification as well. It is a fun and enjoyable
training session.
If you enjoy walking, meeting new people and have a few hours to spare each
month do join the Walking the Way to Health scheme as a volunteer walk
leader. We currently have over 30 leaders in Basingstoke and a further
300+ people are coming along to the walks each week.
