The Basingstoke Gazette web pages is reporting that
"The Conservatives have taken a firm hold over Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council - winning a 10-seat majority in yesterday's election.
All 60 council seats were up for grabs and the Tories surpassed their best expectations to claim 35 of them. The Liberal Democrats won 14 seats, Labour finished with nine councillors and the two independent councillors retained their seats.
The Conservatives claimed several major scalps on their path to victory, unseating Labour group leader Gary Watts and borough mayor Warwick Lovegrove.
Former mayor Tony Jones lost his Buckskin seat after 17 years as county councillor Stephen Reid, a former borough council leader, made a triumphant return.
In Hart district, the Tories maintained their grip on Odiham, Long Sutton and Hook, but failed to take overall control of the council.
