National Blood Week

Make a date to donate - National Blood Week 13-19 June.

Every day 7,000 units of donated blood are needed to help treat patients in desperate need of transfusions in England and North Wales. The selfless efforts of volunteer blood donors ensure that patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia, receive the transfusions they need. New and existing blood donors are encouraged to 'Make a date to donate' at a blood donor session near them during National Blood Week, 13 -19 June. The week includes the internationally celebrated World Blood Donor Day, on 14 June, the birthday of Dr Karl Landsteiner, who in 1901 discovered the ABO blood group system. First time donors should be aged between 17-65, weighing at least 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health. If you've donated before, you can start again up to your 70th birthday and there is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years. To find out more about becoming a blood donor, to book an appointment at a local session, or to find out more about local events in your area during National Blood Week call the Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk
