I have been researching my father's side of the family for a long time now and although I have found lots of family members, there are still a few gaps.
The GIBBONS's originally hailed from Sherborne St. John and over a period of years from the mid-1800s they moved to Bramley and Old Basing and eventually into Basingstoke.
My grandfather Arthur Gibbons travelled to the USA several times with his father. Great Grandfather George Gibbons and his wife Harriet had 12 children and there are still 2 that I can find no trace of after 1901.
George, born 1853 who I think married Jane Miles and William James, who was born in America on one of the travels, born 1861 who married Annie Smith, a widow, in Leicester in 1897. It is understood that they came back to this area to retire, but so far I cannot trace them.
There were also cousins a-plenty from g.grandfather's brothers and sisters and one was Joel and Anne Gibbons from Sherborne St. John who had 9 children. 2 sons and a daughter married and emigrated to Canada, 1 son and 1 daughter I have found in Australia, 1 son Michael and his wife Mary (Taplin) lived in Basing and 1 son lived in Bramley with his family.
The one I cannot trace is: Mary or Maria born 1833 George 1841 (who may have died at 5 years old in 1846).
Any information or anecdotes of any of the GIBBONS lads who lived in Old Basing would be gratefully received.
The family lived in "Church View", the cottage opposite the church which is now known by a different name.
I have a photograph of three of my father's brothers in the Old Basing Football team!(About 1920).
