The Cox Family

Back to index.

I am trying to find out more about my family by the name of COX, who came from Old Basing and surrounding villages.  I am trawling the usual archives, but wonder if anyone can help me with more local knowledge?

JAMES COX
was born c.1835 in Rotherwick. I don’t know who his parents were.  He worked as a yardman on Wakefords Farm, then Wild Moor Farm.

He married ANN (nee unknown, maybe GUDGER?) born c.1840 from Mapledurwell.

James and Ann COX settled in The Street, Old Basing, and had these children:
Fanny COX, born c.1859 in Mapledurwell (possibly married an Edwin GOSLING)
Harriet COX, born c.1862 in Pamber area (possibly married a Frederick HALL)
William Edward COX, born c.1876 again in Pamber area, worked as a printer/compositor. And
Ellen Elizabeth COX, born c.1874 (married Frederick THOMAS, a jeweller in London).

The latter had the following children, it not being clear which were before or after her marriage with Frederick THOMAS:
A girl who died in infancy, born c.1900
Nellie Beatrice May COX or THOMAS, born 1903.
Ena Marjorie COX/THOMAS, born between 1905-10
Eric James COX/THOMAS, born c.1909

If anyone can tell me anything more about this family, I would be very keen to hear from you, or perhaps even visit you for a chat, if you had a few minutes to spare me.
