What we could NOT fit into the September Magazine

Energy and our community
Baden Powell Centre project update

Many will have read last month about the bid by Old Basing Scout and Guide movement for an award of £60k through Energyshare.  The money will be used to incorporate a community energy scheme in our plans for a replacement HQ building at the Milkingpen Lane site.  We hope that if we are successful in this bid we will also attract funding from other corporate entities.  Our aim is to build on the support, contributions, good will and effort we have received from many of you.  We hope to accelerate the programme to build this new facility for the young people of our community.

Our bid to get short listed on the Energyshare scheme was a real success.  Thank you to all of you who registered your support.  We recently received confirmation that our proposal is through to the next stage and we are in the process of preparing draft plans; 100 projects out of over 900 registered schemes were passed to this stage.  We will prepare a project schedule and submit the completed questionnaire by 30 September for consideration by the Energyshare scheme expert panel.

Our aim is to be short listed by the expert panel.  Those schemes that are short listed will be put forward to the national voting stage.  Voting will be open to all those that have registered on the energyshare website.  If you have not already registered but would like to be involved in the vote please register and show your support for our scheme by following the link www.energyshare.com/scout-hut/support/ .

Our progress to date has only been possible with the support shown by many of you and some of the community groups in our area.  I wish to thank our local schools, shops, newspapers, radio station and community groups for support in spreading the word about our campaign; and of course the Basinga.  Those that tweet may find it helpful to follow @OldBasingTweets and @EcoBasingstoke for information about this and similar projects / events in our area; follow our progress on twitter by searching for #scouthut.  Whatever media you choose, please help us by keeping this good news conversation going – we need everyone to vote when it comes to that stage.

The Brookvale Community Group and Basingstoke Transition Network also helped to spread the word.  By way of returning the favour I would like to draw your attention to the Brookvale Green Fair that will be held at the Brookvale Community Centre on 17 September 2011; a fun day for the family.
With your support we could get our Baden Powell Centre built next year in the same year as our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.  For more detail about our plans and progress you can contact the fundraising team by email fundraising4newhut@gmx.co.uk

It is our plan that Paula McBride and the fund raising team will provide a regular update to the community with the help of Basinga.  Due to the complexities of coordination during the holiday season this update has adopted a slightly different approach.  Paula will be back with further details next month.

Thank you for your on-going support.  Andy Molloy.

Local men plan Oxford to Basingstoke bike ride for autism charity

Two local men will cycle a gruelling 51 mile bike-ride from Oxford to Basingstoke to raise money for The National Autistic Society’s (NAS) Basingstoke Branch.

Dave Clark and Peter Stonehouse will cross three counties on their ride, which will take place on 20th August. The fundraising duo will tackle a demanding 91metre climb on the course of their journey.

The two passionate cyclists from Basingstoke aim to complete the course in just seven hours. They will start pedalling from Oxford at 9am and hope to reach the Chineham branch of Tesco at around 4pm.

Dave and Peter are raising funds for the Basingstoke Branch of the NAS which launched in July. The branch is run by a small team of volunteers from the local area who are parents of children with autism and Asperger syndrome. They provide support and friendship to parents, children with autism and their siblings. The branch runs family events and activities and puts on talks from professionals who specialise in autism.

Peter says, “We decided to cycle in aid of the NAS as it is a charity we both really value. Since opening a month ago, our local service already offers so much support to children with autism and their parents in the area”.

Dave says, “We’d like to thank all the generous people who have provided support to us and sponsored us so far. It’s not too late to contribute and we are incredibly grateful for any donations!”

Samantha Clark, NAS Basingstoke Branch Officer, says, “We are so appreciative of Dave and Peter’s fundraising efforts for our local service. It will go a long way in helping us to continue providing support, information and advice to local people affected by autism. With the right support, at the right time, people with autism can lead happy and fulfilling lives.”

Consultation on guidance about improving design of new housing

Residents are being asked for their views on draft guidance for developers designing new homes on issues such as the size of gardens and privacy.

As part of an initiative to improve the design of new housing developments, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has drawn up key principles on appropriate levels of what is known in planning terms as ‘residential amenity'. This gives guidance for those building houses or flats in the borough on how overlooking by neighbours can be prevented, amounts of outdoor space and individual design of the homes.

Now the council is asking residents, local community groups, parish and town councils and developers for their views on the guidelines in a consultation running until Monday 5 September.

Cabinet Member for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure Cllr Rob Golding said: “The size of their garden or shared outdoor space and how much they are overlooked are important to how people feel about the homes they live in. The relationship of buildings to each other and their individual design can have a huge impact on this and that is the reason these guidelines have been drawn up. I urge residents to give us their views so that we can benefit from their experiences in putting together the final version.”

The guidelines can be viewed on the website at www.basingstoke.gov.uk/go/amenityguidance or as a paper copy in all libraries in the borough and at Parklands Reception at the Civic Offices on London Road, Basingstoke. Individual copies are also available by calling the council’s contact centre on 01256 844844.

All views received will be considered before any recommendations are made to councillors later this year on the final, adopted version of the guidance, which will form part of the council’s overall blueprint for planning development to 2027, called the Local Development Framework.

Rooms and role models required!

Do YOU have a spare room?
Could YOU do with some extra income?
Would YOU be up for supporting a local teenager?

If so Stonham Supported Lodgings would love to hear from you!

Stonham support ‘Hosts’ who can help young adults/teenagers gain the skills and confidence to live independently.   Many of the young people they place have had  tough times in their own families or been brought up in the Care System.     They need some stability and support to move forward in their lives and a positive role model.  One recently wrote to her host ‘Thank you for everything….for all the cups of tea, for Christmas day, for letting me win at scrabble, for showing me a way to live a better life…..’  Being a Host can be challenging at times but is a fantastically worthwhile thing to do as you get to really play a part in a young person turning their lives around.

It is quite possible to combine being a supported lodgings host with working full time.  Stonham work at times, in the week to suit you and the young person, will give you flexibly delivered training and you would earn around £165 per week.

For more information on this invaluable role contact Penny Diver on 077259 58288 or email penny.diver@homegroup.org.uk
