Ariadne Visits A&E

23rd May May

Marcus arrived home from school in my car after dropping Violet Elizabeth off at QMC for her Wind Band practice.  I asked all the usual questions. Did you have a good day at school?  Anything exciting happen?  Is your sister OK?  All questions were met with the usual grunts for an answer.  He had been home half an hour when he suddenly said “Violet Elizabeth thinks she has broken her hand”.  Surely this was worth mentioning earlier on I enquired?  “I forgot”, came the reply.  It transpired that there had been a bit of an incident during long jump practice, and in her eagerness to jump the furthest, she had inadvertently got her thumb caught behind her knee as she landed.  It seemed that she didn’t mention this to the PE teacher at the time as she didn’t want to be excluded from sports day on Friday.  Spencer and I rushed off to QMC to inspect the damage.

We returned from A&E at midnight, with her thumb all strapped up and an appointment at the fracture clinic for Thursday.

You wouldn’t believe just how many people have broken something between Tuesday evening and Thursday morning in Basingstoke. The waiting room was standing room only, (assuming you could stand that is) and I felt it was only right to give up my seat to a poor young chap on crutches who was nursing a broken ankle.  We were ushered into a small room to be told that she had definitely broken her right thumb and there should be no games for 6 weeks.  We were sent home with a removable wrist support.

Sports day, and notwithstanding the advice from the fracture clinic, Violet Elizabeth competed in the high jump where she came third and then went on to win the 200m.  Only then did she mention that she was going to find it hard to do her exams the week after half term, and could I get her out of them?  I said that we should wait and see.

Today was the last day of school for Marcus and it was celebrated by the Leavers Ball.  All the young people looked so smart- girls in their long dresses and boys in DJ’s.  Apparently it was a good evening, but I have yet to see the photos.
