The whole Paulet-Halt family decided to try their hand in the British Legion Quiz evening held at the Legion Hall. We had high hopes for our chances, what with Marcus being a member of his school general knowledge team, and Spencer being well known for his ability to recall useless information at the drop of a hat. Sadly our hopes were dashed as we came in a sorry 6th place. There wasn’t even the music round that Spencer had been revising for. Our downfall was the rounds entitled “Dead or Alive” where we were convinced that the people who turned out to be dead were still alive and vice versa. We still had a great evening, and I am sure that a lot of money was raised to assist the Legion Band who is aiming to buy some new musical equipment.

Spent the day in the greenhouse potting up my sunflowers, marigolds and asters. I have seen a draft copy of the Village Show schedule and therefore know for sure that these will feature. You still have some time to sow seeds to get them ready for September, if you want to have a go at entering. You only have to show 3 stems for the marigolds and sunflowers and 5 stems for the asters, so it is not too difficult to manage. All the vases are provided, so all you have to do on the morning of the show is to cut the best ones from your garden and bring them along.
In the evening we went to “An Evening of Youth Music” at the Anvil where the eight Basingstoke Area Youth ensembles performed in front of the Mayor and Mayoress. It was a wonderful evening with over 250 young people from the area taking part. As the compere so rightly said, in these days when many of our young people seem to get such a bad press, it is fantastic to see such dedication and obvious enjoyment from so many of our local children who were aged between 8-18.

Off to Costco with my friend Sheila to order my cake for the Silver Wedding celebration next week. Spencer is in charge of the bar at the Event, so I hope nobody dies of thirst! My hanging baskets might just be ready for the garden party of the year (that’s if the slugs don’t get them first). Regular readers will be interested to know that I still haven’t managed to find out where Spencer is taking me for a holiday. This must be the longest time that he has been able to keep a secret (I think).
I had the evening to myself as Spencer and Violet-Elizabeth went on a school trip to see the Lion King in London, and Marcus is on duty at his school Open Day (now that he is a prefect). I had planned to complete the Order of Service cards for the Big Day, but Spencer still hasn’t finished the typing. Spent the evening instead watching a programme on the TV about Sleep with Kate Silverton (not sleeping with Kate, you understand- she was just presenting it), but only woke up in time for the last 5 mins. which was a shame as it looked as though it was good.
