Cycle Safety on the Road
Cycling is a fun, convenient and healthy way to get around - but if you don't
follow basic safety guidelines you could end up a statistic:
- In 2004 over 3,500 young cyclists aged 11-16 were killed or
injured in the UK.
- 90% occur in urban areas.
- 75% happen at, or near, a junction.
- 80% occur in daylight.
- 80% of cyclist casualties are male.
- About one third of the cyclists killed or injured are children.
- Around three quarters of cyclists killed due to major head injuries.
Before you go out on the roads, stop and THINK! Here are a few basic safety
tips that can help you stay out of trouble:
- First and Foremost, wear a helmet.
- Get trained and keep control.
- Be seen and heard.
- Check/maintain your bike regularly.
- Be alert and plan your route.
- Stay legal.
An experienced trainer can help you get the best from your bike and the road.
They know the dangers and how best to avoid them. They can also help you become
safer and more confident when cycling in traffic, what's the best gear to wear,
and how to check and maintain your bike.
