The fact that the Basinga has received so many tributes proves what a remarkable lady she was. It is with great sadness that I write, as Mrs. Holmes was a great friend to me. She was always there from when I was a child, organising events such as sports days on the recreation ground, flower shows etc – she often provided the prizes. Mrs. Holmes was also a shoulder to cry on and was a tower of strength.
She opened and founded the much needed youth club in Old Basing – we had so much fun in that club.
More recently, she stored my first Barrel Organ whilst we had our garage changed. She gave me every encouragement and said she thought we were doing a marvellous thing keeping these old instruments going. Mrs. Holmes often appeared with us at Old Basing School, Church Tower appeals, fetes etc, and this enabled us to collect more for charity as she would often turn the Barrel Organ to encourage people to donate.
Mrs Holmes was a kind, considerate and generous lady.
We shall miss her so much.
